There’s a strange contradiction in modern Indian eating. We still describe our food as home-style, balanced, grain-based, and cooked fresh. And yet, nutritionally, one major thing has gradually collapsed in the background: fibre intake.

It’s not that Indian food is inherently low in fibre. Historically, it has never been. Traditional Indian meals once naturally included whole grains, millets, legumes, seasonal vegetables, fermented preparations, and minimally refined staples. But over time, in the pursuit of convenience, food became softer, whiter, faster, and more refined. Fibre quietly disappeared without most people noticing — which is precisely why it’s so easy to dismiss.

How much fibre do Indians actually need?

International guidelines suggest women need approximately 25g per day and men 30–35g per day. The ICMR-NIN recommendation for Indian adults is higher at 40g per day — see table below.

Nutritional analyses suggest that many urban Indian diets average somewhere around 12–18g of daily fibre intake — sometimes lower. That would mean a significant proportion of the population is getting barely half the recommended amount, consistently.

What is the average fibre intake in India?

Estimates suggest many urban Indian diets provide between 12 and 18g of dietary fibre per day, significantly below recommended levels. The shortfall is largely due to the replacement of whole grains, millets, and legume-heavy traditional cooking with refined flour, packaged snacks, and convenience foods. These estimates are pending verification against ICMR nutritional survey data.

Why low fibre goes unnoticed

When people hear “low fibre”, they usually think about constipation. But fibre affects far more than digestion.

The “full but undernourished” problem is more common than most people realise. Refined carbohydrates produce rapid satiety — they fill the stomach by volume and trigger a blood sugar spike that signals fullness to the brain. What they don’t do is provide the structural fibre that slows digestion, feeds gut bacteria, and produces the sustained energy release that carries a person through the hours after a meal. The result is feeling genuinely full at 1 PM and inexplicably hungry again at 3:30.

Consider white bread. The milling process that produces fine white flour reduces fibre from approximately 11.4g per 100g in whole wheat atta to 2.76g in refined flour. The texture difference — that familiar softness — is the physical absence of almost 9g of fibre per 100g.

Food that requires more chewing creates stronger satiety signals, slows eating pace, and delivers more fibre per gram. Traditional Indian eating understood this, even if it never articulated it as nutrition science. Bajra roti takes longer to eat than a white bread slice. Unpolished rice is chewier than polished. Whole dal is more resistant than dal made from split, refined lentils. The texture was not incidental. It was nutritional information.

Khapli alone will not compensate for a diet that otherwise remains low in vegetables, legumes, and variety. But because rotis repeat so reliably, the grain improvement compounds in a way that occasional ‘superfoods’ simply cannot. The smartest nutrition upgrades happen through staples, not supplements.

Why most people underestimate fibre needs

Low fibre doesn’t create instant consequences. You don’t feel fibre the way you feel caffeine or a sugar spike. Instead, low fibre slowly changes hunger patterns, digestion quality, gut diversity, and meal satisfaction over weeks and months. The effects are chronic and cumulative, which is why they’re so easy to attribute to stress, sleep, or ageing rather than diet.

Modern food marketing also contributes to the blind spot. Protein is quantified, counted, and marketed aggressively. Calories are tracked. Sugar is feared. Fibre is almost entirely absent from mainstream nutrition conversation, despite affecting everyday wellbeing in ways that are at least as significant as any of the above.
