Dear Shashikala, Thank you for the question
Rice is a dietary staple food and one of the most important cereal crops, popularly consumed in most parts of Asia. Rice can be consumed in appropriate portions within the daily Recommended calorie intake.
• Rice is a good source of Vitamin B, thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2) and niacin (vitamin B3) protein, phosphorus, iron etc.
• Most of the nutrients and minerals in rice are concentrated in the outer brown layer the husk and germ. Brown rice from which only the husk has been removed is the most nutritious type of rice
• The pigment of certain rice can inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaque, because it has anti-oxidative or anti-inflammatory effect
• Rice has the ability to provide fast and instant energy. Brown rice and red rice are great sources of fibre, B vitamins, calcium, zinc and iron, manganese, selenium, magnesium and other nutrients.
• Brown rice contains naturally occurring bran oil, which helps in reducing LDL forms of cholesterol, help in lowering the risk of metabolic syndrome
• Both brown and red rice have high magnesium content than white rice. Magnesium is an important mineral that plays a vital role in the regulation of blood pressure and sodium balance in the body.
• For certain conditions such as diabetes mellitus consumption of white rice is restricted due to its high glycaemic index. It is preferable to consume limited portion or choose less processed rice such as brown rice or red rice.
