Alopecia areata (AA) is a common type of hair loss. It is an autoimmune disorder characterized by transient, non-scarring hair loss and preservation of the hair follicle. The most common pattern is a small annular or patchy bald lesion (patchy alopecia areata), usually on the scalp.
