Dear Janhavi Sandesh kambli, Thank you for the question
Cortisol is a steroid hormone, is synthesized from cholesterol. Cortisol has many functions in the human body, such as mediating the stress response, regulating metabolism, the inflammatory response, and immune function. Therefore, increased cortisol levels is known as Hypercortisolism or Cushing syndrome which occurs when the human body is exposed to high cortisol levels for an extended period of time. It may be caused due to excess production of cortisol in the body due to stress, hormonal imbalance, impaired metabolic activities, or can also be caused due to certain medication etc. Common signs and symptoms of excess cortisol include weight gain (especially in the face and abdomen), diabetes, hypertension, muscle weakness, and osteoporosis.
Unintended weight gain can happen due to sedentary lifestyle, excess intake of high fat foods, hormonal imbalance and/or an underlying health condition. Please contact your health care professional for further diagnosis and assistance.
