class="ez-toc-section" id="Quick_answer">Quick answer

No. Whole grain namkeen does not automatically contain more fibre than another snack. The amount depends on the whole grains and other ingredients used, the finished product’s fibre content, and the portion you actually eat. Check the back of the pack before deciding what the front means for your plate.

Start with the ingredient list. Ingredients generally appear in descending order of weight or volume at manufacture, so the first few tell you which ingredients dominate the recipe. Look for clearly named whole grains and any declared percentages. Besan is a pulse flour, not a whole grain, although it can contribute fibre.

Next, find dietary fibre in the nutrition table. Compare similar snacks per 100g, then calculate your own portion: fibre per 100g multiplied by the grams eaten, divided by 100. A fictional snack containing 6g fibre per 100g provides 1.8g in 30g, or 3.6g in 60g. A handful has no fixed weight.

Read the energy, fat and sodium figures too. More fibre does not settle every question about a snack, and the manufacturer’s serving may differ from yours. If fibre is not declared, do not assume the whole grain wording proves a particular amount.

Namkeen can fit alongside meals. Keep whole grains, dal, vegetables and fruit as regular fibre sources, and increase fibre gradually with enough fluids. Enjoy the crunch with chai; use the label to understand the portion. People following a prescribed diet should use their clinician’s advice rather than treating a front label as personalised nutrition guidance.

Start with the back of the pack

Picture two packs side by side on a kirana shelf, both with ‘whole grain’ in bold, both the sort of crunchy mix you would open with evening chai or keep in the office drawer. The recipes, fibre figures and serving sizes could be quite different. From the front alone, you cannot make a fair comparison.

A handful of namkeen can contribute some fibre. The useful question is how much is in the portion you actually eat.

What ‘whole grain’ does and does not tell you

A whole grain retains the bran, germ and starchy endosperm in the proportions found in the original grain. It can be ground into flour and still be whole grain. Refining removes bran and germ, reducing fibre. The FDA’s whole-grain explanation describes this structure; it is not an Indian labelling rule.

Whole grain content and fibre content are related, but they are not interchangeable. A snack also contains other ingredients, and its finished composition matters. ‘Multigrain’ is not a fibre figure either: check which grains are used, whether they are whole, and the nutrition table.

In India, use the ingredient list and nutrition information to assess a pack rather than relying on the front phrase alone. This does not mean front-of-pack claims are unregulated.

How to read a namkeen pack in four steps

Here is a made-up pack to practise on. It is fictional: none of these figures describes a real product. The table shows selected nutrients for the calculation, not a complete commercial label.

Whole Grain Masala Mix — fictional example

Ingredients: whole-wheat flour (35%), gram flour (20%), rice flour (15%), edible vegetable oil (14%), flattened rice (8%), spices, salt.

Selected nutrition information

Per 100g

Per 30g serving

Energy

460 kcal

138 kcal

Dietary fibre

6.0g

1.8g

Sodium

680mg

204mg

Step 1: Read the ingredient list as a recipe

Under FSSAI’s Labelling and Display Regulations, ingredients are generally listed in descending order by weight or volume at manufacture. Whole-wheat flour coming first therefore tells you something different from whole-wheat flour coming fifth.

Read the names closely too. Gram flour, or besan, comes from a pulse, not a grain. Rice flour does not necessarily mean whole-grain rice. Look for a clear description rather than assuming every flour in a whole grain snack is itself whole grain.

Step 2: Read percentages, then find the fibre line

In the fictional recipe, 35% whole-wheat flour is a share of the ingredients. It does not mean 35% of the snack is fibre. Flour contains starch and other components too.

Percentages help you understand the recipe, but multiplying an ingredient’s percentage by a food-table fibre value cannot reliably establish the finished snack’s fibre. Processing, water loss and other ingredients affect that calculation. Use the finished product’s declared fibre figure.

Fibre is not a compulsory line on every ordinary nutrition panel. If it is missing, ask the manufacturer rather than inferring an amount from the front claim. A specific fibre claim must meet the applicable requirements.

Step 3: Turn per 100g into your portion

Compare similar snacks using the same basis: fibre per 100g against fibre per 100g. Then work out your own portion.

Fibre in your portion = fibre per 100g × portion weight in grams ÷ 100.

For the fictional snack:

A 30g portion gives 6.0 × 30 ÷ 100 = 1.8g fibre.

A 60g portion gives 6.0 × 60 ÷ 100 = 3.6g fibre.

Here, 60g is a hypothetical weighed portion, not a standard handful. Hand size, the mix and how you scoop it all change the amount.

If you eat twice the maker’s 30g serving, double every per-serving number. That means 3.6g fibre, 408mg sodium and 276 kcal in this example. The arithmetic works even when your portion differs from the serving printed on the pack.

If only a per-serving fibre figure is available, divide it by the serving weight in grams and multiply by 100 to compare packs fairly.

Step 4: Read the rest of the table, too

Fibre is one line. On a real pack, read total fat, saturated fat, sugars, energy and sodium too. The fictional table above is deliberately an excerpt.

A snack can contain useful fibre alongside substantial amounts of other nutrients. More fibre alone does not establish that one pack is the better fit for every person or every occasion. If your clinician has given you a sodium or other dietary limit, use that individual advice.

Where your day’s fibre comes from

The WHO recommends at least 25g of naturally occurring dietary fibre daily for adults. Separately, ICMR-NIN’s 2020 nutrient-requirements summary considers about 30g per 2,000 kcal a safe intake. These are population reference figures, not a reason to force a particular number into every day.

Now put the fictional 1.8g from a 30g snack portion next to ordinary food. Two rotis made using a total of 60g of Aashirvaad’s Khapli atta would contribute about 6.4g fibre, using the manufacturer’s listed 10.7g per 100g flour:

60 × 10.7 ÷ 100 = 6.42g fibre.

This assumes those two rotis use 60g flour altogether; roti size varies. Check your pack because product figures can change. It is a flour-based estimate, not the fibre in 60g of cooked roti.

For comparison, IFCT 2017 lists ordinary whole-wheat atta at 11.36g fibre per 100g and maida at 2.76g. Khapli and ordinary whole-wheat atta are broadly comparable on fibre. Using these stated sources, each contains about four times maida’s fibre per 100g; the product figure and generic food-table figures have different bases.

So namkeen can sit alongside your fibre sources, but it should not be asked to replace them. ICMR-NIN’s 2024 guidelines recommend at least half of cereals and other grains as whole or minimally polished grains. Dal, vegetables and fruit contribute fibre too.

Different fibres behave differently. Fibre-rich foods can support softer, easier-to-pass stools, and gut bacteria break down some undigested fibre. There is no need to make one snack carry the whole job.

If your day is currently low in fibre, increase it gradually. Too much too quickly can bring gas and bloating. NIDDK advises adding fibre a little at a time and drinking enough liquids to help it work. Follow any fluid restriction prescribed for you.

Enjoying namkeen without leaning on the claim

None of this means namkeen is off the menu. It means choosing and portioning with your eyes open:

Pick a recipe you enjoy, then check what its first ingredients and percentages tell you.

Compare fibre per 100g, then calculate the amount in your own portion.

Pour some into a katori if that makes the amount easier to judge. Weighing a portion once is optional, not a daily requirement.

Include other fibre sources across the day, such as boiled chana chaat, whole fruit, dal, sabzi and whole-grain rotis.

Enjoy the crunch with chai. A front-of-pack phrase does not need to do more work than the label can support.

Who should adjust this advice?

A high-fibre diet is not suitable for everyone. If you have been prescribed a lower-fibre diet, or have individual dietary needs, follow your doctor or dietitian’s guidance. Children’s needs differ from adult reference figures.

If increasing fibre causes discomfort that persists, is severe or keeps coming back, speak to a doctor rather than repeatedly changing snacks or cutting out foods. If weighing food makes you anxious, you can skip that step and seek support from a dietitian.

Sources

FSSAI: Labelling and Display Regulations, 2020, September 2025 compendium — ingredient order and percentages, regulation 5(2); nutrition information and serving measures, regulation 5(3).

FDA: Whole Grain Label Statements — grain anatomy; US draft guidance, not Indian law.

WHO: Healthy diet — adult fibre recommendation and varied food sources.

ICMR-NIN: RDA and EAR 2020 short report — dietary fibre section, about 30g per 2,000 kcal considered a safe intake.

ICMR-NIN: Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024 — Guideline 1, whole and minimally polished grains.

ICMR-NIN: Indian Food Composition Tables, 2017 — Table 1, A019 wheat flour atta and A018 refined wheat flour; per 100g edible food.

Aashirvaad: Khapli atta product information — listed fibre content used for the roti estimate.

NIDDK: Eating, Diet, & Nutrition for Constipation — gradual fibre increases and adequate liquids.

NIDDK: Symptoms & Causes of Gas in the Digestive Tract — bacterial breakdown of undigested carbohydrates, including fibre.

Disclaimer

This article provides general nutrition and label-reading information, not medical advice or a personalised diet plan.
