Natural, healthy, full of goodness, what’s the difference, right? The truth is, when you press a fruit and drain off the juice, something very important is left behind. And that something is fibre, which is much more important than we realise. So, no: a glass of juice can’t replace the fibre in a whole fruit, and its natural sugars count as free sugars too.

This article is not about demonising fruit juices. A chilled glass of fresh mosambi or pomegranate juice is really delicious, and it does include vitamins and certain plant chemicals. The fruit-versus-juice question is not actually about which is bad. It is about knowing what is different when you take the juice out, and whether you’re getting the full picture of what the fruit had to offer in the first place.

What fibre can do inside your body

Fibre is the portion of plant-based foods that your small intestine is not able to digest. That might seem like a flaw, but it’s not. Different fibres do different jobs: some help bowel contents move along, some can slow digestion and help with fullness, and some are fermented by bacteria in your gut.

Fibre is often grouped into soluble and insoluble types. Soluble fibre dissolves in water; some forms create a gel that slows digestion. Insoluble fibre adds bulk and helps keep bowel movements regular. Whole fruits usually contain both types, in varying amounts. Juicing means that a lot of the fibre gets left behind with the pulp and skin; as Mayo Clinic explains, removing pulp from fruit juice lowers its fibre content.

What juicing does to a fruit

Let’s understand this with an example of our breakfast favourite: orange juice. Juicing an orange is all about extracting the delicious liquid while leaving behind the fibrous bits of the fruit. The juice contains water, natural sugars, vitamins and a few phytonutrients. Much of the fibre stays in the pulp and fibrous strands that are left behind, especially when the juice is strained.

A medium whole orange contains about 3 grams of fibre. How about a classic glass of strained orange juice? Very little. And here’s why that matters in real life: it is easy to drink the juice from several oranges quickly, without eating their pulp or getting the same amount of fibre. A small glass doesn’t necessarily mean a small amount of fruit went into it.

It’s not that fresh juice is packed with added sugar. But once fruit is juiced, its sugars count as free sugars—the category that includes added sugar, as well as sugars naturally present in honey and syrups. WHO advises keeping free sugars to less than 10% of daily energy. The sugar in a whole fruit does not count as free sugar; the same sugar, squeezed into a glass, does.

For portions, the UK’s NHS advises a combined maximum of 150 ml a day of fruit juice, vegetable juice and smoothies, taken with meals. India’s ICMR-NIN 2024 guidelines instead say that freshly made juice for one person should use no more than 100–150 g of fruit. Those grams refer to the fruit used, not millilitres of juice. Both approaches favour whole fruit.

Don’t forget the chewing factor

When you are sipping juice, you just can’t chew. But when you eat a whole fruit, you do. That seems simple, but chewing breaks food down before you swallow. Giving yourself a little more time with your food also lets you notice its taste and texture, rather than having the whole thing disappear in a few gulps.

Enjoying a refreshing juice can be quick, while a guava or a pear asks for a bit more work from your jaw. The difference is not just in the clock, though. In one study of 58 adults, whole apple produced higher fullness ratings than applesauce or apple juice, even when the time taken to consume them was matched. The form of the fruit can matter too.

Fruit after fasting: what to reach for

On fasting occasions such as Karwa Chauth and Chhath, this question feels particularly relevant. After a long day of fasting, the moment you finally break your fast is so special. Many people grab juice because it is refreshing and easy to sip in a hurry.

A small portion of whole fruit, eaten slowly after a few sips of water, is one option if it suits you and your family’s way of breaking the fast. It brings some fibre along with natural sugars for energy. This is not a rule or a prescription, just a practical way to include whole fruit as you return to food.

Soft, ripe fruit like banana or papaya can be easy to eat in a small portion. If your stomach feels unsettled, choose familiar food you usually tolerate; fruit is not compulsory. If you have diabetes or another health condition, check with your doctor before fasting at all.

Is “cold-pressed” or “fresh” juice any different?

Over the past several years, cold-pressed juice has had a genuine moment in metropolitan India, and the marketing behind it can make it seem as healthful as eating the fruit itself. The nutrient advantage is less clear-cut than the labels suggest: one 2024 comparison study, using pineapple, green apple and kiwifruit, found a higher juice yield with cold pressing but comparable total phenolic content in the mixed juices. The result is specific to the juicers and blend tested.

And the fibre story is the same. Cold-pressed or not, the process still separates juice from pulp. You still end up with a drink that contains a lot less fibre than the whole fruit it came from. It may be a nicer juice, but it’s still juice.

When juice makes sense

Juice isn’t bad. A small glass of fresh, unsweetened juice with a meal can provide vitamins and fluids. If hard fruit is difficult to chew, juice is one option; soft fruit or an unstrained fruit blend can fit too. If you have difficulty swallowing, get medical advice. And honestly, sometimes a nice glass of fresh nimbu pani or watermelon juice on a summer afternoon is just fine. Keep added sugar modest.

The point is not to say that juice is the devil. The problem is that you might end up short of some nutrients, including fibre, if you treat juice and whole fruit as if they were the same. India’s own dietary guidelines are clear on the preference: ICMR-NIN’s My Plate for the Day includes 100 g of fruit in its sample daily pattern of about 2,000 kcal and advises preferring fresh fruit over juice. The 100 g is part of that dietary pattern, not a universal upper limit on fruit.

Build this simple habit

If you’re getting your daily fruit by drinking juice each morning, the simplest change is to swap the glass for a portion of whole fruit several days a week, and see how you feel by mid-morning. You may find you stay fuller for longer.

If you enjoy juice and don’t want to give it up, that is completely fine. Just don’t rely on it for your day’s fibre, keep it to a small glass, and have it with a meal. Eat your fruit, drink your juice for the pleasure of it, and think of them as separate things.

If you have diabetes, ask your doctor or dietitian how fruit and juice fit into your meals. And if changes in your eating come with persistent digestive symptoms, get them checked.

Unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool, persistent pain or difficulty swallowing need medical assessment. Seek urgent advice for blood in the stool with abdominal pain. Sudden, severe abdominal pain or vomiting blood needs emergency care. If symptoms continue or keep coming back, speak to a doctor rather than treating them with a food swap.

This is general information. For children, during pregnancy, or for older adults, follow a doctor’s guidance before making changes.

Before you go

Tomorrow morning: swap your glass of juice for a portion of whole fruit, and notice how you feel by 11.

Breaking a fast: if it suits you, try a few sips of water, then a small piece of ripe fruit, eaten slowly.
