Fair enough. That’s where most of us first hear about it. But the body clock that helps organise sleep also coordinates rhythms in other organs, including the gut.

That’s the connection this column is about: the light, and the daily rhythm it helps keep in time. The evidence for light’s effects on sleep and body-clock timing is much stronger than the evidence that changing your light exposure directly improves digestive symptoms. I’d keep that distinction in view.

The clock behind the clock

There’s a small cluster of nerve cells in the brain, called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, that functions as the body’s master clock. Its main job is deceptively simple: it receives light information through your eyes and uses that signal to keep time, then helps coordinate clocks throughout the body. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences includes appetite and digestion among the functions influenced by circadian rhythms.

Your gut has local clocks too, often called peripheral clocks. These help regulate daily patterns in digestive activity. Food timing is an important cue, alongside signals from the brain’s clock. The relationship works both ways; it isn’t simply that sunlight turns the gut on in the morning and darkness switches it off.

Research on digestive clocks describes rhythms in gut movement, digestive secretions and the intestinal barrier. Gut microbial communities and their activity can also vary across the day. That doesn’t mean the bacteria all run on the same clock as our cells, or that a brighter morning automatically creates a healthier microbiome.

A simple way to picture it: imagine your gut as a kitchen that starts prepping breakfast at a set hour every day, because the front of house has always told it what time service begins. Circadian disruption is rather like the kitchen receiving conflicting schedules. It still has to work, but the timing is less coordinated.

The analogy only goes so far. A 2025 review in Gastroenterology brings together research on circadian disruption and gut function, including intestinal barrier and microbial changes. Much of the detailed mechanistic evidence comes from animal or laboratory studies. Human research is growing, but it doesn’t establish that a morning-light routine repairs the gut lining or treats constipation.

Morning light and evening light are not the same instruction

Here’s the part worth actually using. Light doesn’t give the same instruction whenever it reaches you. Its effect depends on the time shown by your internal clock, as controlled human experiments have demonstrated.

For someone who usually sleeps at night and is awake during the day, bright morning light generally encourages earlier body-clock timing. Bright light in the evening or early night can push it later. That is the useful broad pattern, not a promise that one exposure moves every bodily rhythm by the same amount.

An international expert consensus published in PLOS Biology recommends brighter daytime light, lower light in the three hours before usual bedtime, and darkness during sleep, while keeping enough light to move safely. Those recommendations were developed from research in healthy adults aged 18–55 with regular daytime schedules; shift workers need separate consideration.

None of this requires buying equipment to begin. It can mean getting daylight during your usual morning, keeping some daylight in the rest of your day, and being more deliberate about bright screens and room lights as bedtime approaches. There isn’t a universal five-minute dose or a first-hour deadline that guarantees a particular result.

A realistic Indian morning

This advice often arrives wrapped in conversations about long winters and specialist light lamps, which can make it feel foreign to a life that mostly has plenty of sun. It’s worth translating.

You don’t need direct, squinting sunlight. What you’re after is much more ordinary: the short walk to collect milk or the newspaper, a little time on the balcony with your chai, opening the curtains properly instead of working by lamplight with the blinds down. Human field research on natural light exposure supports the importance of the overall light–dark pattern, rather than a single special moment at breakfast.

Outdoor daylight is often much brighter than an ordinary indoor room, including on cloudy days. Shade is fine. There’s no need to sunbathe for your body clock, and never look directly at the sun. Keep your usual sun protection.

A bright window seat can be useful when going outside isn’t practical. The amount of light reaching you varies with the glazing, curtains, distance from the window and conditions outside, so it isn’t automatically equivalent to being outdoors. If heat or poor air quality makes an outdoor break unsuitable, staying by a bright window with it closed is a reasonable option.

If your work-from-home setup means the blinds stay down until noon, that’s one habit worth a look. A sunny city doesn’t give you much daylight if you spend the whole morning behind a closed curtain.

If your mornings aren’t really mornings

Shift workers, hospital staff, call-centre teams — a fair number of people reading this don’t get a conventional morning at all, and that’s not a lifestyle failure to be talked out of. It does make circadian alignment harder.

The daytime advice cannot simply be reversed by calling any waking time “morning”. Your internal clock, the shifts you work and the sleep you need all matter. For people working full-time night shifts, NIOSH guidance notes that brighter light in the first half of a shift can support alertness, while reducing light later may help with sleep afterwards. Lighting needed for safe work still takes priority.

Rotating shifts add another complication: fully moving the body clock to nights may not suit the next change in your rota. If sleep or digestive symptoms keep troubling you, a clinician familiar with shift work can help you plan around the hours you actually have. It’s a harder job with a less cooperative environment, and that’s worth being kind to yourself about.

Three things worth knowing by name

Suprachiasmatic nucleus or SCN

A small region in the brain’s hypothalamus that receives light information from the eyes. It acts as the master clock, helping coordinate daily timing across the body, including signals to digestive organs.

Peripheral clock

A local timing system in an organ or tissue. The gut has these clocks, as do many other parts of the body. Food timing and signals from the master clock help coordinate them. Circadian disruption can involve clocks falling out of step with one another or with the outside day–night cycle.

Phase advance and phase delay

A phase advance means a rhythm shifts earlier; a phase delay means it shifts later. Morning and evening light often produce these different effects in people on a regular daytime schedule. Timing is important, but brightness, duration and recent light exposure also influence the response.

Advance or Delay

For each habit, decide what sort of signal it is likely to provide: an earlier-timing cue, a later-timing cue, or something less definite. Assume the person usually sleeps at night and wakes in the morning. These examples illustrate the principles; they don’t measure anyone’s body clock.

1. A short walk outside after waking in the morning, once daylight is available.

2. Scrolling on a bright phone screen in bed at midnight, when you would usually be asleep.

3. Keeping the blinds down and working under ordinary artificial light all morning.

4. A dinner with dim, warm lighting as bedtime approaches.

5. A brightly lit gym session at 10 pm when your usual bedtime is around 11 pm.

6. Sitting by a bright window with breakfast.

Answers

1. An earlier-timing cue. Morning daylight generally supports an advance, or helps keep the clock aligned with a daytime routine. A particular walk length doesn’t guarantee a measurable shift.

2. A possible later-timing cue. Bright light near usual bedtime can delay the clock. How much depends on the screen, brightness, duration and your sensitivity. Room lighting matters too.

3. Potentially a weaker daytime cue. It depends on how bright the room actually is. Missing daylight isn’t itself an automatic “delay by omission”; it may mean losing a useful contrast between day and evening.

4. Less of a late-light signal. Dim, warm evening lighting can reduce the light working against your usual sleep schedule. It doesn’t actively advance the clock just because it is dim or warm.

5. A possible later-timing cue. Bright light close to usual bedtime can encourage a delay. This answer concerns the lighting, not a blanket verdict on evening exercise.

6. A potentially useful daytime cue. Daylight through a window can contribute. Its strength depends on the window and where you sit, so the word “sunny” alone doesn’t tell us the dose.

Your daylight checklist

Think about a typical weekday. This is a prompt for noticing habits, not a score for your circadian rhythm or gut health. It is aimed at people with a regular daytime routine.

I make room for daylight during my usual morning, once the sun is up.

I open the curtains or blinds, when privacy and conditions allow.

I get some daylight across the day, rather than treating a brief morning break as the whole job.

My workspace has useful daylight, or I take a daylight break when possible.

My evenings get dimmer as bedtime approaches, rather than staying bright throughout.

I consider both room lighting and screens when winding down.

I keep a reasonably regular sleep and wake schedule, as my circumstances allow.

No total to add up. Pick a change that fits your life: the curtains, the balcony chai, the daylight errand.
