Not the aspirational version — the real one, including the repeats.

It’s easy to find yourself rotating a fairly short list. The same dal twice, the same two sabzis, rice or roti, some curd, whatever fruit was in the house, tea. There’s nothing wrong with any of it. But the range can be narrower than we imagine, and the range turns out to be interesting.

Where the number came from

You will, at some point, have seen the advice to eat thirty different plants a week. It’s everywhere. It’s worth knowing where it actually comes from, because that tells you how much weight to put on it.

It comes from the American Gut Project, a large citizen-science study published in 2018. The project’s dataset included samples from more than 11,000 people, primarily from the US, UK and Australia. People reporting more than thirty different plant types a week had more diverse gut microbiomes than those reporting fewer than ten. There were also differences in certain bacteria linked to fibre fermentation.

Now the part that mostly gets left out. The headline cohort was large, but a detailed stool-chemistry comparison used much smaller groups — around forty people at each end. The study was observational, meaning it recorded what people already did rather than assigning them to change their diets. Participants volunteered, and their food intake was self-reported. Those are useful observations, but they cannot establish that thirty plants causes better health. Microbial diversity is a research measure, not a personal gut-health score.

There is newer trial work too, including a small 2025 study in 25 adults with chronic kidney disease. That is useful follow-up in a specific group of patients, not a universal prescription for healthy adults.

So: thirty is a useful nudge in a sensible direction. It is not a clinical threshold, and nothing switches on at plant number thirty. The Microsetta Initiative, which continues this work, says the same thing — that thirty is a guideline, not a rigid target. Treat it as a way of asking yourself a better question.

Why variety specifically, rather than just ‘eat more fibre’? Different plants carry different types of fibre, and gut microbes differ in their ability to break those fibres down. Widening the range of plants can give the microbial community a wider mix of material to work with. It isn’t a neat arrangement in which one plant feeds one bacterial species. The explanation is plausible, and it fits the research, though — as with much of gut science — the details are still being filled in.

The finding I find most useful

Buried in the same work is something more quietly interesting: the labels people gave their own diets — vegetarian, vegan, omnivore — did not tell the whole story. In this dataset, the range of plants people ate was more informative than those broad labels alone.

I like this finding because it cuts against how we usually argue about food. The category you place yourself in doesn’t tell us everything about what is on your plate. A vegetarian diet can be varied or narrow, just as an omnivorous one can. The label is not the meal.

What counts is more generous than you think

Here’s where people relax. Plants aren’t only vegetables and fruit. Grains count. Legumes and pulses count. Nuts and seeds count. Herbs and spices are plant ingredients too.

Which means an ordinary Indian kitchen is set up rather well for this. A single dal tadka might involve the dal itself, plus jeera, haldi, garlic, tomato and coriander leaves. That’s six different plant ingredients before you’ve served it. Open your masala dabba and look at what’s in there. There may be more variety in that box than you had noticed, used daily, without anyone calling it a wellness practice.

One distinction matters: an ingredient count is not a serving count. A pinch of haldi is not the nutritional equivalent of a portion of dal or vegetables. And coriander seeds and coriander leaves come from the same plant, so they don’t need two entries. Fibre from a variety of foods still matters, alongside the amount you actually eat.

This is why I distrust the superfood framing. It sells you a single expensive imported thing — usually a seed, usually in a pouch — as the answer, when the more supportable idea is unglamorous: eat a wider range of ordinary things. Rotate your dals rather than defaulting to one. Buy vegetables you don’t usually buy. Let the seasons change what’s in the house.

Now, about virtue

There’s a habit of thinking about food in moral terms — clean and unclean, good and bad, virtuous and indulgent. Gut health has been pulled into that language quite badly, and I’d gently push back on it.

Variety is an argument for adding, not for subtracting. For someone without a medically prescribed restriction, it needn’t mean giving things up, buying anything imported, or feeling bad about a meal they already enjoy. It asks a much lighter question: how many different plants made it into my week, and could I add two or three more without any drama?

That’s the whole idea. It’s less exciting than a superfood, and a more useful place to start.

Three things worth knowing by name

Plant diversity

The range of different plants you eat over a period, rather than the amount. Fruits, vegetables, grains, dals and pulses, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices can all contribute. Different forms of the same plant don’t automatically make separate entries, and a long ingredient list doesn’t tell us whether the portions are substantial or the whole diet is balanced.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)

Compounds produced when gut bacteria ferment certain fibres. They are one reason fibre matters beyond simple bulk. The American Gut research linked higher plant variety with some bacteria capable of producing them; that is not the same as proving a health benefit for each person. The research here is active and promising rather than finished.

Observational study

A study that records what people already do and looks for patterns, rather than assigning them to do something and measuring the result. Useful for spotting relationships; limited in what it can prove about cause. The original ‘30 plants’ finding comes from this kind of research — which is why it’s a good prompt and a poor commandment.

Myth vs reality: the superfood edition

Six things people believe about ‘gut-healthy’ eating.

Myth

Reality

‘There’s one superfood that fixes gut health.’

No single food can guarantee good gut health. Think back over the last seven days and count the different plants you ate.

Count each plant once across the whole week, however often you ate it. Wheat roti and wheat dalia are one entry; whole and split moong are one; coriander seeds and leaves are one. This is an informal kitchen inventory, not a validated health test. A longer list built from tiny pinches of spices does not replace variety in the main parts of your meals.

Category

Examples to jog your memory

Your number

Grains

Wheat, including wheat atta or wheat dalia; rice, jowar, bajra, ragi, oats, maize

___

Dals and pulses

Toor, moong, chana, masoor, urad, rajma, lobia

___

Vegetables

Every distinct one, including onion, tomato, garlic and ginger

___

Fruit

Every distinct fruit, including the ones in chutney or raita

___

Nuts and seeds

Peanut, almond, til, flax, melon seeds

___

Herbs and spices

Haldi, jeera, dhania seeds or leaves, methi, ajwain, elaichi, dalchini, curry leaf, mint

___

Total

Count each plant only once, even if it appears in more than one category

___

What to do with your list

Look for repetition, not a grade. If the same grain, dal and two vegetables do most of the work, choose one or two familiar alternatives for the next shop. If your list is already varied, keep the rotation seasonal rather than chasing a bigger total. There is no research-based pass mark for this exercise.

One caution, sincerely meant: do this once out of curiosity, then put it away. Counting plants is a useful way to notice a rut. It is not meant to become another thing to be anxious about at dinner, and food is not a test you pass or fail.

Sources

McDonald D et al.
