Cook bhoger khichuri and labra until tender, keep dhokar dalna moist with gravy, and offer papad and bhajas separately. Let the person choose their portions, and follow any existing dietary advice for chutney and payesh. These suggestions are for chewing comfort. Coughing, choking or a wet-sounding voice during meals may indicate a swallowing problem; seek medical assessment rather than assuming softer food will make eating safer.

Durga Puja Food Can Still Feel Familiar

Durga Puja meals are diverse. But the bhog, the meal offered to Maa Durga, has a familiar menu that can be adapted according to family traditions. It often includes khichuri, labra, dhokar dalna, a few bhajas or fried accompaniments and, finally, chutney, papad and payesh. Wait, you need a teaser of the experience first.

So, imagine a dainty sal leaf plate being generously served with steaming bhoger khichuri. The labra is plopped right next to it, the hot and crispy bhajas are placed on a dry edge, and the dhokar dalna is there to delight your taste buds as a vegetarian main. After that, to refresh the palate, chutney is served with some papad for a textural rebirth as well, with a little indulgent payesh and sweets waiting as the last course of a very filling meal.

For many Bengalis, this way of serving and this particular menu hold a lot of memories, and eating with the fingers adds to the pleasure of it. This entire experience stays with them throughout their lives, from childhood to old age. In 2026, Drik Panchang’s Kolkata calendar lists the Puja observances from 16 to 21 October. But once time starts taking its toll on the body and the seasons crowd the personal calendar of life, the approach to epicurean pleasures may need a few adjustments as well, for comfort’s sake.

For some older relatives, the nostalgic plate may need a few adjustments. And if you are hosting them at home, you must keep their preferences and difficulties in mind. Only then will they feel truly included in the Puja fun as well. That does not mean creating a separate, joyless ‘senior citizen diet’ for the festive season. It means recognising that older adults have very different appetites, food preferences, dental health, medical conditions and abilities to chew or swallow.

The Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Nutrition’s Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024 (ICMR-NIN) recognise that ageing can bring changes in appetite, taste and smell, while highlighting the importance of varied, nutrient-dense foods rather than simply cutting down on all food. So, your goal should be figuring out what this particular elderly loved one can comfortably savour and enjoy.

Start With the Bhoger Khichuri

For many Bengali families, Durga Puja and bhoger khichuri are absolutely inseparable. It is also one of the easiest festive foods to adapt for a relative who finds softer food easier to chew, without making it feel changed at all, so the adjustments are guilt-trip-proof as well. Cook the rice and dal together until tender, rather than leaving the grains dry and separate. A serving of approximately ¾ cup to 1 cup could form the base of their plate. This and the other portions below are only starting points: follow the person’s appetite, usual intake and any medical advice, and offer more if they want it.

If you are cooking at home, let your khichuri simmer a little longer and add enough water for the rice and dal to soften properly. A little ghee at the end can provide the familiar bhoger aroma and richness without compromising on texture or taste. There is no need to insist on a particular grain, or to swap in brown rice simply because it is considered more nutritious. A person who finds soft rice comfortable can very easily have a perfectly happy, reasonable festive meal built around it. Always keep in mind that, for an older relative, the texture of the food matters as much as the ingredient list.

Give Labra a Proper Place

Labra is one of the most useful dishes on a Durga Puja plate because it naturally brings the flavours and characters of several vegetables together in one soft yet zesty preparation. Pumpkin, potato, sweet potato, raw banana, brinjal, cabbage and other vegetables can all find their way into the various versions of labra. The exact combination varies between kitchens, which is part of its adaptable, regional charm.

For an older relative who prefers softer food, cook the vegetables until they are tender enough to break easily when pressed with the side of a spoon. Keep the pieces manageable and avoid leaving large, firm chunks. A ½ to ¾ cup serving alongside khichuri gives the plate colour, extra flavour, a helping of fibre and variety without any extra, complicated preparation. And labra is rarely bland. Ginger, cumin, panch phoron and a modest amount of chilli keep its memorable Bengali character, even when the vegetables are cooked a little longer for extra tenderness.

Choose Softer Bengali Vegetables

For festive meals at home beyond bhog, other Bengali vegetable preparations can be adapted simply through cooking time. For example, aloo-phulkopi can be cooked until the potatoes and cauliflower are softer, rather than keeping the usual firmer bite. Niramish or amish potoler dolma (with a vegetarian or non-vegetarian stuffing) can remain the stuffed vegetable dish it has always been, in a mild gravy; just make sure the potol, or parwal, is stewed longer in the gravy for a melt-in-the-mouth bite.

Shukto is another possibility, especially for someone who enjoys its iconic, complex flavour. The vegetables should be cooked until tender, while the dish keeps enough of its characteristic structure to remain recognisably shukto. This is where a regional family kitchen has an advantage over a generic ‘soft diet’ menu: the food can remain culturally familiar and delicious without breaking or catching on unruly dentures. A vegetable does not need to be boiled into submission simply because it is being served to an older person. The target is comfortable texture, not the utter absence of it.

Dhokar Dalna Can Be Made More Comfortable

Dhokar dalna is one of those dishes that can turn out surprisingly firm or soft, depending on how the dhoka is prepared. For an older relative, use a finely ground dal mixture for the dhoka, and soften the pieces further by letting them soak in the gravy for longer. Also make sure you cut the dhoka into manageable pieces.

The final gravy should be generous enough that the dhoka pieces don’t sit dry on the plate. A small portion of two or three soft pieces with gravy could work very well alongside rice or khichuri, depending on appetite. This is also an example of why ‘soft food’ does not automatically mean ‘food without flavour’. Cumin, ginger, turmeric and other spices still build the familiar Bengali flavour profile; remove any hard whole-spice pieces before serving. The main things that change are the texture and the moisture.

And Then Come Chutney and Payesh

A Bengali festive meal almost always ends with chutney, be it at a puja, a wedding or a family feast. Tomato chutney, raw mango chutney, pineapple chutney or another family favourite can stay on the table. Some recipes contain substantial added sugar, though, so check how yours is made and let any existing dietary advice guide the serving. A small spoonful can provide the sweet-tangy palate refresher that prepares the taste buds for dessert.

The same principle applies to papad and fried accompaniments. They can be offered separately rather than automatically piled onto a senior relative’s plate. That way, someone who enjoys them and can comfortably eat them can happily ask for a serving, while someone who finds them hard, dry or too tiring to eat can simply skip them. That is what choice looks like in practice. And if there is one thing that should not disappear from a Durga Puja meal merely because someone is older, it is the food they have always associated with the celebration. Especially payesh.

A small serving of payesh is naturally soft and spoonable. Depending on the family recipe, it can be made with rice, milk, sugar and cardamom, with raisins or nuts added towards the end. For someone who has difficulty chewing, serve the payesh without large pieces of dried fruit or nuts. If an older relative has diabetes or another health condition that requires them to watch their sugar or carbohydrate intake, their existing medical advice should guide whether and how payesh fits into the meal. A small serving is not automatically suitable for everyone. There is no universal rule that older adults must avoid festive sweets. Nor is there any reason to insist that everyone must have them. The right choice belongs to the individual and their medical context.

Ask About Swallowing Before Changing Texture

There is an important difference between finding something hard to chew and having actual difficulty swallowing it. Softer familiar foods may help someone whose main difficulty is chewing, for example because of dental problems. But coughing or choking while eating or drinking, a wet or gurgly voice after swallowing, or food feeling stuck in the throat or chest needs prompt medical assessment. Don’t simply keep softening the next meal and hope the problem goes away.

Swallowing difficulties, also called dysphagia, need a proper, individual assessment. A doctor may involve a speech and language therapist (also called a speech-language pathologist) or another swallowing specialist. Food and drink textures may need to be modified in specific ways; softer food and more gravy are not automatically safer. If the person already has a swallowing plan, follow it rather than changing textures yourself.

If someone is choking and cannot breathe, speak or cough, get emergency help immediately.

Bringing It Together

A comfortable Puja plate for an older relative is mostly about small, thoughtful choices. Ask them, ideally a day or two before, what they find easy or difficult to eat. Seat them where they won’t feel rushed, and serve hot dishes warm rather than scalding. Offer drinks in keeping with any advice they have about fluid amounts or swallowing. If medicines need to be coordinated with meals, ask them or their caregiver what timing they follow; don’t change it on their behalf. Soft-cooked vegetables like labra and shukto still contribute fibre, alongside all that familiar flavour.

For help with menu ideas, ask Happy Tummy GPT: “Suggest a Bengali Puja menu with familiar vegetables and less deep-frying.” Most of all, let them choose. The point of the Puja plate was never just the food. It is about being served alongside everyone else, from the same pots, with the same love. Adjusting the texture is simply how you make sure that, this year too, nobody is left out.

Sources

ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition.
