Plan a proper meal stop, and drink regularly according to the heat, walking and your own needs. Choose food prepared to order and handled carefully; take particular care with water, ice and foods kept exposed or unrefrigerated. No stall’s appearance can guarantee safety. Take breaks in a cool or shaded place, and follow any prescribed dietary or fluid advice while you are out.

Every year, before Durga Puja arrives, most people, especially youngsters, start making plans. And most of them are very sensible, actually. For example, if it’s a daytime outing, you plan to start with a good breakfast, visit a few iconic pandals, click great photos, stop somewhere slightly fancy for lunch, maybe, and then return home before the crowds become too much. But out of the blue, you spot an unknown, beautifully lit pandal, someone suggests a detour, and the evening stretches far beyond what you had initially planned.

ALSO READ | Ashtami Prasad: Enjoying Halwa, Puri and Kala Chana

Somewhere between the queues, the selfies, and the long walks, you realise you have barely had any water and lunch was a lone chicken roll eaten in a hurry. Now, for many people, this is part of the charm of Durga Puja. Everywhere you look, there is food, and half the fun lies in deciding what to eat next. There is a great puchka stall near one pandal, jhal muri at another, a fish fry counter sending a mouthwatering aroma your way and, of course, a beloved sweet shop that makes the entire group stop for some mishti doi or baked rosogolla.

Nobody wants, or should have, to spend the whole Puja worrying about every bite. For 2026, Drik Panchang lists Kolkata’s Puja observances from 16 to 21 October; local calendars and ritual dates can differ. Yet a day spent outdoors, walking for hours and eating whenever an opportunity presents itself, can leave you tired, thirsty or uncomfortably full. A little thought put into meals, drinks and breaks can help you enjoy your pandal trail without turning it into a test of endurance. The idea is not to avoid your favourite festive foods. Instead, it is to make sure you have enough energy to enjoy them.

Make Time for Breakfast Before Pandal Hopping

On a day devoted to pandal hopping, skipping breakfast to save room for street food may seem like a good idea. But in practice, it may leave some people very hungry long before they reach the first major food stop. And when that happens, it can become harder to judge whether you want a snack or a proper meal. So, eat your usual breakfast before leaving home. It could be poha, idli, eggs and toast, roti with a cooked accompaniment, or whatever you normally find satisfying in the morning.

And if the whim strikes, opt for a festive breakfast at home instead of going out to seek one. For instance, in a Bengali household, a festive breakfast might look somewhat different from an ordinary weekday meal: luchi and aloo dum, or even kosha mangsho, if you feel extra indulgent. There is no need to change it simply because you will be eating out later. Choose a portion you usually find comfortable, keeping the rest of the outing in mind.

If you expect to be away for most of the day, then carry something small and handy to eat between meals. A banana or a small portion of roasted chana can be a convenient snack when food is going to take some time and hunger pangs seem to be gnawing on your insides. This is especially useful when travelling with children or older family members, because the next food stall may be some distance away, and a queue can easily turn a short stop into a long wait. Choose snacks suited to each person’s age and chewing ability.

Festival Hydration: Carry Water Along With Your Phone

A day in Kolkata during Puja can involve a lot more walking than you realise. You may spend an hour moving between pandals and another half-hour standing in a queue, sometimes in warm, humid and crowded conditions. On a hot afternoon, all that walking and waiting can leave you sweating. So, carry a bottle of safe drinking water. If you need a refill, use a source you know is safe. Otherwise, buy packaged drinking water from a dependable seller, and check that the factory seal is intact.

And this advice is old, but solid gold. Make time for drinking breaks throughout the outing. Your fluid needs depend on the weather, the amount you walk, how much you sweat, as well as your individual health. Drink regularly according to those needs, without trying to finish a fixed number of bottles. If a clinician has advised a fluid limit, follow it. ICMR-NIN’s Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024) treat adequate water as part of everyday nutrition. During a long Puja outing, that means keeping water within reach as the route changes.

If you are wondering about the drinks sold at stalls, then nimbu pani and coconut water can be refreshing choices, provided they are handled safely. With freshly prepared drinks, the quality of the water and ice matters just as much as the ingredients. A coconut opened in front of you still needs clean hands, a clean knife and clean serving equipment; opening it to order does not guarantee safety. A drink made with contaminated water is not made safe by adding lemon or sugar. Soft drinks and packaged juices may appeal when you want something sweet, but water is a useful drink to keep returning to throughout the day.

Make Time for Lunch Before the Crowds Get the Better of You

One of the easiest mistakes to make during Durga Puja is to keep snacking because stopping for lunch seems inconvenient. Now, a few bites here and there may keep hunger at bay for a while, but they do not necessarily leave you feeling satisfied in the way you wanted. So, by midday or early afternoon, try to find somewhere to sit and have a proper meal. In Kolkata, that could mean a chicken or egg roll, a plate of biryani, fish curry with rice, a Bengali meal with dal, vegetables and fish, or any cuisine of your choice. In other parts of India, regional favourites can take their place. There is no single festival menu that everyone needs to follow.

Portion size also deserves a little attention here. A large biryani followed immediately by fried snacks and sweets may leave some people feeling heavy early on, especially if they start walking again right after eating. So what to do instead? You could share a larger serving, take a proper break after lunch, or leave room for a sweet later in the evening. A hurried, oversized meal may leave you uncomfortably full, and eating too fast may not help either. Rich gravies, fried accompaniments, and eating more than usual can all contribute to that feeling of fullness. The response varies from person to person, so there is no need to label a particular dish as unsuitable for everyone.

What Should You Eat at the Stalls?

The best way to approach pandal food is to decide what you really want rather than trying to taste everything in sight. So, if you want something quick and nifty, puchka or jhal muri can be an enjoyable stop. Choose a vendor who prepares food to order and handles the ingredients carefully.

With puchka, pay particular attention to the water source and handling. Clean-looking utensils and a busy queue cannot tell you whether the water is safe. If you cannot establish how the water is sourced or how the food is handled, give it a miss.

But if you are hungry enough for something more substantial, a thoroughly cooked fish fry or an egg, chicken or paneer roll served hot may be more satisfying than several rounds of snacks.

And then there are the sweets. A Puja visit often feels incomplete without stopping for mishti. Sandesh, rosogolla and other Bengali favourites can easily find a place in the day’s food trail. You do not have to avoid dessert just because you ate a fried snack earlier. Choose a portion you will enjoy, especially if you have already had a filling meal.

ALSO READ | Golu Sundal Recipes: 9 Varieties for Navratri

Food safety matters regardless of what you order. Avoid ready-to-eat food exposed to dust or flies, handled repeatedly, or left unrefrigerated for a long time—especially cut fruit, chutneys and cooked fillings. For desserts that need chilling, such as mishti doi, check that they are kept cold. Wash your own hands with soap and water before eating, too. The World Health Organization’s Five Keys to Safer Food emphasises safe water, clean handling, thorough cooking and appropriate storage.

Take an Evening Break Before You Run Out of Steam

By the time the gorgeous lights are turned on, you may have walked much farther than you intended. Your feet may be hurting, the crowds are growing, and the group is still debating whether to visit one more pandal. And right then is a good time to stop for a while instead of immediately joining another queue. Find somewhere to sit, drink some water, and work out what you need to feel rested and regain energy. If you are only a little hungry, a simple snack, like a banana, may be enough. But if lunch never happened, then a proper meal is a better idea than trying to get through the evening solely on snacks.

Plus, children and older adults may need more frequent breaks, especially when seating is limited and walking distances are long. If you follow a care plan, build meals, drinks and breaks around it. If someone feels dizzy, nauseated or unusually weak in the heat, stop walking and move them to a cool or shaded place. Help cool them with a damp cloth and fanning. Offer water only if they are fully alert and able to swallow, and stay with them.

Confusion, fainting, inability to drink or worsening symptoms in the heat need urgent medical help. Call 112 or arrange immediate emergency care, and keep cooling the person while help is on its way. Get urgent help too if they remain unwell after about 30 minutes of rest and cooling. Do not give drinks to anyone who is not fully alert.

It also helps to think about dinner before the last food stop. If you have already eaten a substantial lunch and several snacks, you may prefer something lighter when you get home. However, if your day has been hectic and you have missed a meal, a proper dinner may be exactly what you need. Let your appetite guide you rather than feeling obliged to eat a large meal simply because it is the final stop of the day.

Before the Last Pandal

Durga Puja is meant to be enjoyed, crowds, queues, food and all. A good breakfast, a bottle of water, a proper lunch and a break before the evening rush won’t take anything away from the day; if anything, they leave you with enough energy for that last pandal and that last plate of puchka.

Sources

ICMR-NIN: Dietary Guidelines for Indians 2024
World Health Organization: Five Keys to Safer Food manual
CDC Yellow Book 2026: Food and Water Precautions for Travelers
CDC: Preventing Food Poisoning
NHS: Heat exhaustion and heatstroke
CDC: Heat-related illness warning signs and first aid
Ministry of Home Affairs: Emergency Response Support System
Drik Panchang: Kolkata Durga Puja calendar 2026

Disclaimer: This article provides general food, hydration and safety information, not personalised medical advice.
