An estimated 90–95% of the body’s serotonin is made there, mainly by enterochromaffin cells in the gut lining. It helps regulate gut movement, secretion and sensation. Gut serotonin does not cross the blood-brain barrier; the brain makes its own. The gut and brain still communicate through nerves, immune signals and compounds made by microbes. Researchers are investigating how these pathways relate to mood, but the familiar “90%” statistic alone does not show that a particular food or supplement can make you happier.

You’ve heard the term ‘trust your gut’ more times than you can count. However, in recent times, the health community has given a startlingly literal interpretation to that phrase. The idea that your gut and your brain are closely linked has been getting some real attention. And in the thick of all this enthusiasm, there is one question worth asking: if most of your serotonin is made in the gut, what does that actually mean for your mood?

Things get hazy when the statistic is used to infer that improved gut health equals better mood, or that eating the correct foods might reduce sadness.

World Mental Health Day falls on 10 October. The 2026 theme is ‘Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change’. It’s a day about listening to people’s real experiences of mental health, and also a good moment to pause before taking a wellness headline at face value. So let’s look at what’s real, what’s hype, and why the gut–brain connection is slightly more complicated than you might think.

What Is Serotonin?

Serotonin is a chemical messenger. In the nervous system, it acts as a neurotransmitter, helping cells pass signals to one another. In the brain, it is involved in mood, sleep and appetite. But mood depends on much more than one chemical; serotonin is not a happiness switch.

Serotonin isn’t just found in the brain. The majority of it is produced by specialised cells that line the gut, known as enterochromaffin cells. A 2022 review in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility puts the gut’s share at around 90-95%. This gut-based serotonin plays a role in gut contractions, secretion and how the intestines sense their contents. Your gut has plenty of work for that serotonin to do.

The Critical Detail: Gut Serotonin Doesn’t Travel to Your Brain

Now, this is where the important detail comes in. The serotonin produced in your gut doesn’t make its way up to your brain. The blood-brain barrier is like a careful gatekeeper, ensuring that only certain substances can pass from the bloodstream into the brain, and serotonin is one of the things it keeps out. While the 90% figure is broadly accurate, it doesn’t imply that your gut is supplying the serotonin involved in mood in your brain.

Your brain makes its own serotonin. Gut-derived and brain serotonin are separate pools, but that doesn’t mean the systems never talk. They share a starting material, tryptophan, and communicate indirectly through the gut–brain axis. When released in the gut, serotonin can also activate nearby sensory nerve endings, including those of the vagus nerve. Those nerves carry information to the brain; the serotonin itself stays outside it.

This distinction is really important, particularly when wellness content suggests that eating yoghurt or taking probiotics will directly enhance your mood by increasing serotonin levels. That’s not quite how the mechanism operates.

What About “Serotonin Foods”?

While we’re on the subject, you may have seen lists of ‘serotonin foods’. Even when a food contains serotonin, the same gatekeeper applies: eating it does not deliver serotonin straight to your brain.

Other lists focus on tryptophan, the amino acid your body uses to make serotonin. Sources include everyday foods like milk, curd, paneer, eggs, dals, nuts and seeds, although the amounts vary. Your brain does need tryptophan to make its serotonin, but tryptophan has to compete with several other amino acids to get across the blood–brain barrier. A tryptophan-rich meal doesn’t translate neatly into more serotonin in your brain.

What Does the Gut-Brain Connection Do?

The gut and the brain are in continual two-way contact via what’s called the gut–brain axis. One important pathway is the vagus nerve, a long cranial nerve that goes from the brainstem down through the chest to the abdomen. It sends messages both ways: the brain communicates with the gut, and the gut talks back. Immune signals, hormones and microbial metabolites are part of the conversation, too.

Then there is the involvement of gut microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiota. Researchers are investigating how they may influence the gut–brain axis, including through the compounds they produce and their interactions with enterochromaffin cells. Scientists are still working to understand how these pathways relate to mood and stress responses in people.

Anyone who’s had a bad stomach before an important presentation knows the gut–brain connection in a visceral way. That familiar experience helps explain why the subject feels so believable. It doesn’t, by itself, tell us which pathway is responsible.

What the Research Can (and Can’t) Show

A biological explanation can sound convincing long before it becomes dependable advice. When a headline links gut bacteria, serotonin and mood, it helps to ask what the researchers actually measured. Were they looking at serotonin in the gut, a change in nerve activity, or how people felt? Those are different results.

A 2015 study in the journal Cell, for example, found that certain gut bacteria influenced serotonin production by enterochromaffin cells in mice. That is a useful finding about a mechanism. It does not establish that eating a particular food increases brain serotonin or improves mood in people.

The vagus nerve provides another example. Around 80–90% of its fibres carry information towards the brain from internal organs, according to a review in Frontiers in Psychiatry. Those organs include more than the gut. The number describes the nerve’s wiring; it doesn’t tell us how much of a person’s mood is controlled by their stomach.

The questions about people need studies in people. Researchers also need to distinguish a change in a biological marker from a meaningful change in everyday experience. More serotonin in a mouse’s gut and someone feeling better after a meal cannot simply be treated as the same finding.

What Food Studies Actually Tell Us

Food research is interesting here, but its results need to stay attached to the question that was tested. A 2021 study in Cell compared higher-fibre and higher-fermented-food diets in 36 healthy adults. The researchers tracked gut microbes and immune responses, and found different effects in the two groups. The fermented-food group showed increased microbial diversity and reductions in some inflammatory markers. The study did not establish that these changes improved mood or increased brain serotonin.

Dahi and some traditionally prepared kanji may contain live microbes, depending on preparation and storage. Idli is fermented too, but the batter is steamed before eating; cooked idli should not be presented as a source of live probiotic cultures. Fermented food, food with live cultures and a probiotic are not interchangeable terms.

Our guide to fermented foods such as idli, dahi and kanji explains those differences. For the wider picture, see what is real and what is wellness hype in the gut–brain connection.

A review in Nutrients also describes how findings on tryptophan and mood depend on the people and experimental conditions studied. Supplementing one amino acid in a controlled experiment is different from eating dal, paneer or a handful of nuts as part of a mixed meal. A food list cannot skip over those differences and promise a better mood.

The Gut-Brain Axis: Yes, It’s Worth Watching

Mental health and the microbiome are hot topics right now, and researchers are eager to see where this line of inquiry leads. The interesting questions are becoming more specific: which microbes, which compounds, which pathways, and in whom? That specificity matters more than a sweeping claim that every fermented food or probiotic will have the same effect.

Your gut and brain do have an important relationship. It just doesn’t work through the serotonin pathway in the way many people believe. Understanding that distinction gives you a better way to read the next ‘gut happiness’ headline. There is good reason to keep watching the research, without expecting every meal to change your mood.

If you would like mental-health support in India, Tele-MANAS offers free, confidential help around the clock on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416, with support in multiple Indian languages.
