Be cautious when one food is presented as a cure, a product seller offers certainty without independent evidence, or a dramatic result is promised within days. In India, food claims must be truthful, not misleading and scientifically substantiated; foods cannot claim to prevent, treat or cure disease unless specifically permitted. Persistent, severe or unexplained digestive symptoms belong with a qualified healthcare professional, not a reel or search result.

In This Column

Why gut health advice can sound so contradictory, even when nobody is deliberately lying.

Four questions to ask of any claim: who is saying it, is there a mechanism, would a regulator allow it, and does it survive the one-food test?

What FSSAI rules say about health claims on food labels and in advertising.

What trustworthy advice sounds like, and which words should make you pause.

Where content stops and a healthcare professional starts.

Tell someone you study nutrition and, sooner or later, they reach for their phone.

It happens at weddings, in staff rooms and in the queue at a buffet. Someone pulls up three screenshots. One says dairy is inflammatory and should go. One says curd is the best thing that can happen to an Indian digestive system. The third is a doctor, on video, explaining why both of those people are wrong.

Then comes the only sensible question in the whole exchange: so who am I supposed to believe?

I want to begin this series there. Not with fibre or fermented food, but with the filter that makes every later choice more useful. If you cannot tell useful advice from confident noise, everything that follows becomes guesswork — and often expensive guesswork.

Why Gut Health Advice Feels So Contradictory

It is tempting to assume the internet is full of liars. Mostly, it is not. What it is full of is people who are partly right, speaking with total confidence.

Nutrition is genuinely unsettled in places. Sensible, qualified people can disagree about fasting, dairy or how much protein a particular person needs. That is not a scandal; it is ordinary science, still working. The trouble is that a thirty-second video has no room for “it depends”, and “it depends” is the honest answer to many questions about digestion. The nuance gets trimmed off, and what remains sounds like certainty.

There is a second thing worth naming plainly. A lot of health content is also selling something. Not always a product; sometimes it is simply your attention. Either way, it shapes what gets said and how loudly.

Four Questions to Check Any Gut Health Claim

You do not need a science degree to filter gut health advice. You need four questions, and they take about ten seconds each.

1. Who is saying it, and what do they gain?

This is not cynicism; it is arithmetic. Someone explaining how fibre works has different incentives from someone whose supplement link sits in the caption. Both may be right. But knowing which one you are reading tells you how hard to squint.

Check the person’s relevant qualifications, whether they name their evidence, whether the information is current and whether the same advice appears in an independent source. A disclosure does not make a claim false; it simply helps you weigh it properly.

2. Is there a mechanism, or just a miracle?

Good advice usually explains why. “Some fibres absorb water or add bulk, which may help stool pass more comfortably” is a mechanism. You can follow it, and you could go and check it. “This powder detoxes your gut” is not a mechanism. It is a claim with nothing underneath.

A missing mechanism is not proof that something is nonsense. It is a reason to ask more questions before you change your diet or spend money.

3. Would FSSAI allow this claim in an advertisement?

This is my favourite because it is a shortcut most people do not realise they already have. In India, food-claim rules cover labels and advertisements, including internet and website promotion. Claims must be truthful, unambiguous, meaningful, not misleading and scientifically substantiated. Foods also cannot claim to prevent, treat or cure a disease unless the regulations specifically permit it.

So when a reel or post says a food “cures” acidity or “eliminates” a condition, do not assume the caption lives outside the rules. Ask whether the same sentence could survive regulatory scrutiny. A reel does not get a truth exemption.

One more distinction matters: the FSSAI licence number on a packet identifies a licensed food business and helps with traceability. It does not prove that a particular health claim works.

4. Does it survive the one-food test?

No single food fixes a gut. Not curd, not ghee, not any seed, however photogenic. Digestion responds to patterns: what you eat across a week, how you sleep, how much you move and how rushed your meals are. Advice that hangs everything on one hero ingredient is, at best, one small tile in a much larger mosaic.

A related test is the promised timeframe. Some effects can be noticed quickly; others take weeks. A fair timeframe depends on the change and what you are measuring. Be wary of any promise that a long-standing problem will be transformed by Friday.

What Trustworthy Gut Health Advice Sounds Like

It is, I am afraid, less thrilling than the alternative. It contains words such as “may”, “often” and “for some people”, because that is how evidence about real people often reads. It explains who the advice is for, names uncertainties, avoids making one change responsible for everything and gives a realistic timeframe.

Crucially, trustworthy advice tells you when to stop reading and seek help. Anything persistent, severe, new or unexplained belongs with a qualified healthcare professional, not a search bar. Ongoing pain, bleeding, unexplained weight loss or symptoms that wake you at night deserve medical attention.

I will hold this column to the same standard. In the columns ahead, I will separate what is well established from what looks promising and what we genuinely do not know yet. Where the evidence is thin, I will say so rather than dressing it up. You should expect that of anyone asking for your trust, including me.

Start there. Everything after it gets a great deal easier.

Health advice is easy to compress into a slogan; bodies are not. Under the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, such claims must be truthful, not misleading and scientifically substantiated. Foods may not claim to prevent, treat or cure disease unless specifically permitted.

Correlation and causation

Two things happening together does not mean one caused the other. People who eat more fibre may also sleep better, move more and drink more water. A study showing that higher-fibre eaters report feeling better cannot, on its own, tell you which part of that pattern did the work. This is one of the most common ways a real finding becomes an unreal headline.

What does “studies show” actually mean?

Not all evidence is equal. One small study is a hint, not a verdict. A well-conducted systematic review can give a stronger picture because it evaluates the wider evidence rather than one result. It is not magic: its conclusion is only as sound as the studies and methods behind it. When a claim rests on “a study”, it is fair to ask how many people took part, for how long and whether anyone else found the same thing.

Further reading: ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition, Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024) — India’s official dietary guidance, including advice on varied diets, food labels and supplements.

True or False: Can You Spot a Dubious Health Claim?

Six quick ones.
