A day of tea and biscuits, a few chips and a handful of namkeen can keep your hands busy without giving you the protein and fibre that help you feel satisfied. Poor sleep, stress and long gaps followed by grazing can add to it. There’s no single right number of meals, and snacks aren’t “bad”. But when small bites keep replacing balanced meals, hunger tends to come back fast.

Think about yesterday for a moment. How many times did you eat? Breakfast, a cup of tea with biscuits, a handful of namkeen before lunch. Then lunch at your desk, coffee at 4 pm, a few chips during a meeting. Then dinner, followed by something sweet in front of the TV.

Now ask yourself a different question: how many of those were actually meals?

Many of us find ourselves eating repeatedly between meals, while working, commuting or dealing with stress, without ever really sitting down to a balanced one. The result? You may feel as if you’re eating all the time, yet still find yourself hungry, low on energy or reaching for another snack an hour later.

What is grazing?

Grazing means eating small amounts frequently through the day instead of, or on top of, regular meals. It isn’t unhealthy in itself. What matters is whether those small bites add up to enough balanced, nourishing food.

Eating often isn’t the same as eating well

There’s nothing wrong with eating several times a day. Some people naturally prefer three meals; others do well with smaller meals and snacks. In fact, a 2025 review for the US Dietary Guidelines found there wasn’t enough evidence to recommend any particular number of meals or snacks for adults.

The problem isn’t frequency. It’s when your day starts to look like this: tea, a biscuit, coffee, a few chips, another biscuit, half a sandwich, a chocolate bar, and so on. By evening, you’ve eaten seven or eight times, but you may still feel as though you haven’t had a proper meal.

Why do I feel hungry soon after eating?

Have you ever eaten a few biscuits with tea and felt hungry again within an hour? Or grabbed a few handfuls of mixture while working, only to go looking for food again soon afterwards? Hunger and fullness depend on what you eat, how much, when, and on your sleep, stress and activity. But snacks built mostly on refined flour, sugar or oil often lack the protein and fibre that help a meal feel satisfying, and high-fibre foods tend to be more filling than low-fibre ones.

Two other common culprits are worth knowing:

Sleep. Research has found that a single night without sleep can leave people feeling hungrier the next day.

Stress. When stress drags on, the hormone cortisol stays raised, and it’s linked with a bigger appetite and cravings for sugary, fatty food.

Constant snacking makes it harder to read your own signals, too. If you’re eating every hour or two, it becomes surprisingly difficult to know when you’re genuinely hungry. Was that afternoon chocolate because your body needed food? Because you were bored in a meeting, or stressed? Or simply because it was sitting on the desk? If that constant pull towards food sounds familiar, our piece on food noise is worth a read.

What makes an eating occasion satisfying?

Think about the difference between these two lunches:

Lunch A: tea, two biscuits and a packet of chips.

Lunch B: two rotis, dal, mixed vegetables, a bowl of curd, and some fruit later in the afternoon.

Both involve eating, but they’re not nutritionally equivalent. Lunch B brings a whole grain, protein, vegetables and dairy together; Lunch A is mostly refined flour, oil and salt. A snack can be balanced too, but these two examples aren’t.

It’s worth looking at those two rotis. If they’re made with Aashirvaad Chakki 100% Khapli Atta, they bring around 6.8g of fibre on their own, because the atta has about 11.4g of fibre per 100g, on a par with whole wheat atta and nearly four times the fibre of maida. Add dal and sabzi, and you have a meal that’s far more likely to carry you to the evening than a packet of chips.

A satisfying meal doesn’t have to be elaborate. For many Indian households, it could mean:

a staple such as whole wheat rotis, rice, millets or dalia

a bowl of dal, or another protein such as paneer, eggs, chana, fish or chicken

seasonal vegetables

curd, where it suits you

a little healthy fat, like the tadka in your dal or a few nuts

Fruit and water can come at any point in the day; they don’t need to sit on the same plate. Notice that none of this is about eating more. It’s about eating better.

Is snacking bad for you?

No. Snacks aren’t “bad”, and for some people, especially children, older adults, very active people and anyone facing long gaps between meals, they can be genuinely helpful.

The question is simply: is this snack supporting your day, or replacing a proper meal? A useful snack bridges a gap and brings some real nourishment with it: a banana before your commute, roasted chana in the afternoon, fruit with curd, a small sandwich, or a handful of nuts. How much you need depends on your age, appetite and how active you are. Living on tea and biscuits until dinner is a different story. If the sweet stuff is what keeps calling, these tips for reducing sugar cravings may help.

How snacks quietly replace meals

Most people don’t plan to snack all day. It just happens. You skip breakfast because you’re late. Someone offers cake during a meeting. You grab a packet of chips because lunch is delayed. You get home exhausted and overeat at dinner.

By the end of the day, you’ve eaten constantly, but not particularly well. The issue isn’t a single biscuit or one handful of namkeen. It’s when those small bites quietly replace balanced meals, day after day.

No one eats perfectly every day. There will be birthdays, office parties, travel and deadlines. The goal isn’t to eliminate every snack; it’s to notice your overall pattern. Sitting down to eat, even for ten minutes and away from the screen, makes a real difference; it’s the idea behind mindful eating.

Try a three-day meal log

Are balanced meals becoming the exception rather than the rule? For the next three days, don’t change what you eat. Just write it down honestly.

Time

What did I eat?

Meal or snack?

Hunger before (1–5)

Hunger 2 hours later (1–5)

At the end of each day, ask yourself:

Did my day include enough substantial meals or snacks for my hunger and activity?

Did snacks replace a meal?

Did I feel hungry again soon after eating?

Did I eat because I was hungry, or because I was bored, stressed or simply busy?

Did my main meals include vegetables, protein and a whole grain?

You may be surprised by what your own log reveals. It can suggest patterns, but it can’t tell you whether you’re meeting your nutritional needs. You can also add your meals to My Meal Plan to see how much fibre your day added up to. And if writing down what you eat starts to feel stressful, stop; noticing is enough.

Ask Happy Tummy GPT

Happy Tummy GPT can help you spot whether snacks are replacing meals and suggest simple, balanced swaps. It can’t assess whether you’re eating enough for your needs; a doctor or dietitian can. Try this prompt: “Here’s my three-day meal log. I’ve recorded everything I ate, whether it was a meal or a snack, how hungry I was before eating and how I felt afterwards. Can you help me see whether snacks are replacing balanced meals, and suggest simple everyday Indian options to fix that?”

Sometimes the biggest improvement isn’t eating less. It’s giving your body a proper meal when it’s actually asking for one.

When constant hunger needs a doctor

Feeling hungry all the time isn’t always about snacks. If it comes with feeling very thirsty, peeing more than usual, tiredness or losing weight without trying, it can be a sign of conditions such as diabetes or an overactive thyroid. Some medicines can also increase appetite. These need a doctor’s assessment, not a meal log.

If symptoms continue, are severe, or keep coming back, it’s worth speaking to a doctor. Sudden weight loss, blood in stool, severe or persistent pain, or difficulty swallowing need prompt medical attention.

And if eating has started to feel out of control, or food is causing you real distress, talk to a doctor or mental-health professional.

The Bottom Line

Eating often doesn’t automatically mean you’re eating enough, and it isn’t automatically a problem either. If most of your day is biscuits, chips, tea and quick bites between meetings, you may stay busy eating without ever feeling truly satisfied. Instead of counting how many times you eat, pay attention to what those eating occasions look like.

A few balanced meals built around a staple, vegetables and protein, with snacks that actually nourish, will usually do more for your hunger, and your gut, than a day spent grazing. Your digestive system isn’t keeping score of your snacks. What counts is the overall pattern.

Sources

2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (USDA/HHS). Scientific report, Part D, Chapter 6: Frequency of meals and/or snacking.

Mayo Clinic. Dietary fiber: Essential for a healthy diet.

Schmid SM et al.
