Compare the numbers and see which difference actually matters.

Here are the numbers, without the marketing gloss: Khapli atta carries about 11.4g of fibre per 100g; regular whole wheat atta carries about 11.36g (IFCT 2017). That’s a difference of 0.04g — close enough to call the two fibre-equivalent. Maida, by contrast, carries about 2.76g per 100g — meaning whole wheat and Khapli both carry nearly four times maida’s fibre. If you’re choosing an atta for fibre alone, the real decision isn’t between Khapli and regular whole wheat. It’s between any whole-grain atta and refined flour.

Khapli and Whole Wheat Are Fibre-Equal — Not Khapli-Superior

It’s worth saying this plainly, because it’s the most commonly assumed thing about Khapli that isn’t quite true: Khapli is not higher in fibre than regular whole wheat atta. The two are, for practical purposes, the same — 11.4g versus 11.36g per 100g is not a meaningful difference. Any claim that positions Khapli as the higher-fibre choice over standard whole wheat atta isn’t supported by the data, and it’s not a claim this series makes.

ⓘ The Numbers, Side by SideKhapli atta: ~11.4g fibre per 100g (brand-verified, IFCT 2017)Regular whole wheat atta: ~11.36g fibre per 100g (IFCT 2017, A019)Maida: ~2.76g fibre per 100g (IFCT 2017, A018)Khapli vs whole wheat: a 0.04g difference — not meaningfulWhole grain vs maida: nearly 4× — the comparison that actually matters

Why Verified Numbers Matter Here

It would be easy for a piece like this to simply assert that Khapli and whole wheat are ‘about the same’ and move on. The numbers above are deliberately sourced rather than estimated — IFCT 2017 is India’s standard reference food composition table, and Khapli’s specific figure is brand-verified against it rather than assumed. That distinction matters in a category where a lot of atta marketing leans on vague, unsourced claims; this series’ entire credibility rests on not doing the same thing, even when a softer, vaguer claim might sound more flattering.

The Comparison That Actually Matters: Whole Grain vs Maida

Where the real gap shows up is between whole grain and refined flour. Maida carries about 2.76g of fibre per 100g — roughly a quarter of what whole wheat or Khapli carry. That nearly 4x difference is the comparison worth paying attention to, because it reflects what milling removes: refining strips out the bran and germ that whole-grain atta keeps.

What That Looks Like on a Plate

Two rotis made from about 60g of Khapli flour add roughly 6.8g of fibre. Three rotis, from about 90g, add roughly 10.3g — about a quarter of the ICMR-NIN daily recommendation of 40g, and around 41% of the WHO’s global minimum of 25g. Because whole wheat and Khapli are fibre-equivalent, these numbers hold for a standard whole wheat atta roti too — the maths doesn’t change based on which whole-grain atta is in your dabba. A maida-based roti or paratha of the same size, by contrast, would add roughly a quarter of that fibre — around 2.5g for three rotis — which is the gap this entire comparison is really about.

Why the Difference Feels Bigger Than It Is

Khapli does behave differently in the kitchen, and that’s real — it’s just not a fibre story. Khapli has a notably higher water absorption (about 73.0%) than typical roller-milled atta, which is part of why its rotis can feel softer. Its grinding profile — about 28.8% damaged starch against roughly 9.2% for standard roller-milling — is consistent with the stone-chakki-style milling that gives heritage wheat its particular texture. These are genuine, noticeable differences in how the dough behaves and how the roti eats. They simply sit in the texture and technique column, not the fibre column. It’s an easy substitution to make mentally — a roti that feels different must be nutritionally different too — but texture and fibre content are simply answering two different questions, and conflating them is exactly how an honest observation about mouthfeel turns into an inaccurate claim about nutrition.

Why This Specific Comparison Comes Up So Often

Khapli, whole wheat and maida together capture a question that almost every Indian household with a choice of atta on the shelf has asked at some point: is the more expensive option actually better, or just differently marketed? It’s a fair question, and one that deserves a fair answer — which is exactly why this series treats it as the anchor piece rather than a footnote. Getting this comparison right, and stating it plainly even where the honest answer is ‘no meaningful difference’, is what the rest of this series’ Khapli-specific content depends on for its own credibility.

What This Doesn’t Settle

This comparison isn’t a verdict on which atta to choose, and it deliberately doesn’t try to be. It doesn’t speak to glycaemic index — no Aashirvaad product carries a published GI figure, and none should be assumed. It doesn’t make Khapli, or any wheat atta, suitable for anyone avoiding gluten; all of them contain it. What the numbers do settle is simpler: if the question is fibre, whole wheat and Khapli are tied, and both comfortably beat maida. Everything past that — taste, texture, what’s available, what you grew up eating — is a kitchen decision, not a nutrition one.

Why Bother Comparing at All, Then?

Because the comparison most people are actually curious about — is the more expensive, harder-to-find atta in my kitchen nutritionally ‘better’ — deserves an honest answer, not a marketing one. The honest answer is: not on fibre. If that changes the calculation for what goes in your next sack of atta, that’s a useful thing to know before you buy, not after. And if it doesn’t change anything — if texture, taste or habit are the deciding factors — that’s a perfectly good reason too. The numbers are simply there so the decision, whichever way it goes, is made with accurate information rather than an assumed one.

A Note on Price and Perceived Value

Khapli typically costs more than a standard whole wheat atta, and it’s worth being upfront that this comparison doesn’t settle whether that price difference is worth it — that depends on taste, texture and what a household values, not on a fibre figure. What it does settle is that the price premium isn’t buying extra fibre. Anyone choosing Khapli specifically for a fibre advantage over whole wheat is paying for something the numbers don’t actually deliver — which is exactly the kind of gap worth knowing before, not after, the purchase.

Read → Do → Log → Return

Do: Find the right flour for your personal diet and digestion goals.

Ask Happy Tummy GPT: “Which atta fits my current food routine?”

Reflect: “Curious about your everyday atta and gut health?
