water can feel soothing, but there is no strong evidence that it cures bloating, constipation or acidity. Small human studies show that water temperature can temporarily affect stomach contractions and gastric emptying, but the findings are mixed and the effects appear short-lived. Cold water does not “shock” the stomach or solidify food. The one genuinely important temperature warning is at the other extreme: regularly drinking very hot beverages above about 65°C has been linked to an increased risk of oesophageal cancer. For everyday hydration, drink water at the temperature that helps you drink it comfortably and consistently.

Warm water isn’t a miracle cure for digestive problems, but the full picture on warm water and digestion is a little more interesting than a flat yes or no. Water temperature can produce small, measurable changes in how the stomach moves, but research has not shown that choosing warm water over cold or room-temperature water meaningfully fixes bloating, constipation or acidity. If warm water helps you drink enough through the day, that habit is probably doing considerably more work than the temperature itself.

Ask almost any Indian household what to drink after a heavy meal, and you’ll probably hear the same answer. Have some warm water. Some people start the day with it. Others swear by a glass after dinner. A few won’t drink cold water at all because they’re convinced it slows digestion. But does warm water actually improve digestion, or is this one of those habits that’s been passed down for so long that we’ve stopped questioning it? The answer sits somewhere in the middle.

What does water temperature actually do to digestion?
The honest answer is: something measurable, but probably not enough to justify the dramatic claims made about it. Small human studies have found that very cold and very warm drinks can temporarily change gastric contractions and the rate at which material moves through the stomach. The findings are not entirely consistent from one experiment to another, though, and these studies generally involve small numbers of healthy volunteers under controlled conditions.

Cold water certainly doesn’t make food “solidify” in your stomach. In one study, a cold drink lowered the temperature inside the stomach immediately after drinking, but it had already warmed back to above 30°C within about five minutes — a useful reminder of how quickly the body begins normalising beverage temperature.

One genuinely useful, separate point on temperature sits at the other end of the scale. The International Agency for Research on Cancer defines very hot beverages as those consumed above 65°C and has classified drinking them as probably carcinogenic to humans because of their association with oesophageal cancer. That has nothing to do with supposed digestive benefits and everything to do with repeated exposure to very high temperatures.

ALSO READ | Kadha and Gut-Soothing Home Brews: What They Can and Can’t Do

Warm water isn’t a miracle cure for digestive problems, but if it helps you drink enough water throughout the day, that habit can absolutely support your overall hydration. For some people, warm water simply feels soothing, especially after a rich meal or first thing in the morning. That’s a perfectly valid reason to enjoy it. The problem begins when warm water is presented as a treatment for every digestive complaint — from bloating and constipation to acidity and “detox.” That’s where the evidence becomes much less convincing.

A Familiar Ritual: Meenakshi’s Morning Glass

Meenakshi has started every day with a glass of warm water for as long as she can remember, a habit passed down from her grandmother, and firmly credits it with keeping her regular.

Out of curiosity, she tracked a fortnight where she alternated warm water some mornings with room-temperature water on others, keeping everything else the same. Her bowel habits were, if anything, slightly more consistent on the days she also had her usual breakfast on time and went for her morning walk — regardless of water temperature. The one thing that stayed constant either way was that she always drank a full glass first thing, something she rarely managed later in the day.

Meenakshi hadn’t been wrong that her morning ritual helped her routine. She’d just been crediting the temperature with something that might equally have come from the full glass of water, the regular timing, breakfast and movement.

Warm, Cold and Room-Temperature Water: What the Evidence Actually Shows

Claim

What the evidence actually shows

Warm water speeds up digestion

Temperature can temporarily affect stomach motility and emptying, but studies are small and inconsistent; warm water is not a proven digestive accelerator

Cold water shocks the stomach or solidifies food

Not supported. Overall hydration, fibre intake, food choices, activity and underlying health matter considerably more

What About Constipation?

Many people say a glass of warm water in the morning helps them have a bowel movement. For some individuals, that routine may genuinely become part of what gets their day started. What we do not have is good evidence that the warmth itself is an effective treatment for constipation.

If constipation is a recurring problem, it’s worth looking at the bigger picture: are you eating enough fibre, are you drinking enough fluids throughout the day, are you physically active, and have your bowel habits changed recently? NIDDK guidance on constipation focuses on sufficient fibre, adequate liquids and regular physical activity rather than prescribing a particular water temperature.

Those questions usually tell a more complete story than whether the morning glass was warm or cold.

Does Cold Water Really “Shock” Your Stomach?

There’s another common myth that cold water shocks the stomach. For most healthy people, there’s no good evidence that drinking cold water harms digestion or causes food to solidify in the stomach.

Temperature can briefly affect gastric motility. In one small study involving 11 healthy young men, drinking 500ml of water at 2°C was associated with a lower frequency of stomach contractions an hour later than drinking water at 60°C. Older studies have also observed gastric responses to both cold and warm stimulation.

That is physiology, not evidence of damage.

And your stomach does not remain icy after you drink cold water. Research measuring temperature directly inside the stomach found that cold beverages began warming rapidly, reaching above 30°C within about five minutes.

If you personally find cold drinks uncomfortable, there’s nothing wrong with choosing warm or room-temperature water instead. Just don’t feel that you have to avoid cold water because it is supposedly paralysing digestion.

And What About Very Hot Water?

This is where temperature actually deserves more attention.

“Warm” and “very hot” are not the same thing. IARC defines very hot beverages as those consumed above about 65°C and classifies drinking very hot beverages as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A), based on the association with oesophageal cancer.

You do not need to measure every mug with a thermometer. The practical point is simply not to make a virtue of drinking tea, coffee or water while it is still scalding. If a drink is uncomfortably hot in your mouth, giving it time to cool is a much more sensible habit than believing extra heat makes it more therapeutic.

Warm can be pleasant. Scalding is not an upgrade.

It’s All About the Habit

Instead of asking, “Should I drink warm water?” ask something more useful: “Which type of water helps me stay hydrated consistently?”

If warm water encourages you to drink more, great.
